Hi there, I think it’s time to introduce myself. My name is Wana Miri and I am the founder and owner of Women On Topp.
This is me. 18 years ago I came to Holland as a refugee. I was only 8 years old when my family and I fled to Europe. Every single day I am thankful for my parents and this country for giving me a hopeful future. My family and I had no choice but to start over and build a new life.
I’ve always had a dream to work for myself, and when I was studying I had an even bigger urge to work for myself. As a recent graduate of the University of Rotterdam, I had to make this dream a reality.
I’ve had different jobs throughout my life, but everywhere I worked I felt like there is more out there for me. Needless to say, I was too ambitious for the jobs I had. As a very opinionated person, I was not always considered the best employee. Once, a company fired and rehired me, all in one day! I have a voice and I will use it too! Yeah… This statement is not very loved by bosses. Throughout the years I learned, I could not work somewhere or for someone who doesn’t appreciate my ideas and creativity.
Where did my urge start for working for myself?
I have always been a venturous person and I like to do my own thing. When I was 9 years old, my older sister and brother had a paper delivery job. One day I saw them with the yellow pages, so I thought why would you give the yellow pages away for free when you can try to sell them. I know it sounds crazy, but of course, back then I didn’t know it was illegal. Anyway, I took the yellow pages without anyone noticing. I went over to my friend’s house and handed them over to her and told her to go door-to-door and sell the yellow pages. So I stood there and watched her go around the neighborhood. She really did sell all the yellow pages. Sorry friend, if you are reading this! Since then, I always felt that I wanted my own business.
So How did I really start with Women On Topp?
“This is a man’s world! But it is nothing, NOTHING without a woman or girl”. James Brown knows! So I like to see how different career driven people think and work. I honestly think entrepreneurs are the most inspiring people on the planet. I was always looking up articles, blogs, news and anything that would feed this curiosity. Soon I came to realize that all of these blogs were written about men. I knew this could not stay this way if we want to attract more women into this field. Therefore, I started a blog just for women written by women and inspired by women. When I started this, I saw the potential growth and that there are a lot of women just like me who were interested in this. Which was exactly my goal!
What is my ambition?
Women On Topp is an inspirational online magazine made for ambitious women, career-oriented women and female entrepreneurs around the world. By sharing motivational quotes, ‘how-to’s’, news etc. my ambition is to eventually reach out to women all over the world. I want to inspire and I want to be inspired. Everyone who has a dream should follow it. That’s my biggest purpose. I really believe in making dreams come true and I want everyone else to believe this too.
We live in an age where everything is possible, where we should be fearless and thankful.
