Determined individuals dream of the day an opportunity presents for them to shake hands, embrace, communicate, or be recognized from elite professionals in their field of interest. We wonder how will the opportunity present, and what would the conversation entail? We might even say to ourselves, “If I could just meet XYZ… “
If the opportunity presents: What would you say? How would you make the most of the moment, and how will you be memorable?
Lets sum it up saying: You have to know what to say, when to say it, and how to share it.
What to Say: It is important to know all about the influential person you want to meet so that when the moment comes, you will be able to ask content-driven questions that are related to the professional. Recommendation: Refrain from asking information that has already been presented. Whether via website, online articles, “public knowledge”. However, refer to public information as a premise for further insight such as: I would ask Oprah to share with me her art of influence. This question will provide me with her “How to Method of becoming” without blatantly asking her to endorse me.
When to Say: The goal is to demonstrate intelligence, knowledge, and familiarity of interest. We want to refrain from looking anything less than a strong-minded professional who knows where she/he is going. If asking for something is on the agenda other than knowledge, please refrain. Remember: if you have an instant oomph, it is likely for them to express interest in working with you. Recommendation: Commend professional on their accolades, acknowledge their triumphs, and express genuine interest in any insight provided. Take notes, and be studious.
How to Share: It is a big want for determined individuals to share their adventures, journeys, and goals she/he seeks to aim. However, that conversation should refrain until a soft conversation. (Soft conversation- is an opportunity that is presented after you have spoken with a person before). The goal is to be memorable. You want the professional to want to know more about you. The goal is to create a long-standing relationship and endless opportunities. Do not ruin it by soliciting their help on a project as soon as you meet. Give it some time. Allow them to trust you and do their “due diligence”. Whether it is meeting someone as powerful as Oprah, or speaking with your immediate boss in hopes of a job promotion.
Trust me: true leaders are looking for opportunities to assist others.
Well, if you are an extraordinary individual such as myself, we have planned out the “moment of desire” and are ready to offer the elite a moment to know why they should know us. Get ready: if you are working hard enough, the opportunity is just around the corner!
