How to Get Your Feet in the Door | The Key Connect

Professionals oftentimes say, “You will really need to know someone to work there” or “You will really need to have an inside connection to talk with that person”. Whether it is getting a “foot” in the door or finding someone to speaking on our behalf, we enjoy help from others. However, there is no greater person to successfully provide an opportunity for you other than yourself! It is possible to jump states, land a job of your dreams, work for the government, work for a well-known company, whatever you want to do – you name it and it is possible. However, it is all up to you 100%.

Whether it is landing a job or a huge promotion, obtaining any type of goal requires time, effort, and consistency. Sacrifice time, put in the effort, and remain consistent.

Time:

Getting a promotion or landing a career opportunity takes time, especially if wanting to work for the best companies is a goal. It is always helpful and a good look to know all about the company. Keep up with their growth, trends, and leadership! Most companies are looking for professionals who can display their genuine commitment to the opportunity presented. On the forefront, your professionalism, portfolio, and communication with a company are the first measures toward commitment. How much time did you really utilize to prepare for the job? Take the time to plan your career rather than looking for the next job to get you by. Allocate time to prepare to apply for a job and to prepare for the interview. Remember it is all up to you 100%.

Effort:

I remember getting A’s in school for participation or A’s for effort. Unfortunately, the “school of finding a job” rarely offers A’s for effort. Believe it or not, your efforts are being measured. Your job application, resume, cover letter, professional attire, and knowledge of the company are some of the many ways companies measure your ability to be an asset. You must embody a genuine interest with a purpose that is bigger than you that is easily displayed through your communication and actions. Most people/companies are self-centered and your needs are the last things on their “To Do List”. Remember to demonstrate your abilities to be of service to the company first, and then the company will compromise on your needs: salary, CEU’s, commute, etc.

Consistency:

Securing employment is a process now. Candidates undergo least three assessments and observations before being offered the opportunity. This process can be summed up in one word: Consistency. Will your story, accolades, talents, skills, and motives remain the same? Or will they change depending on the different questions presented? Interviewing can be intimidating; however, knowing who you are and how you can be an asset will WOW the applicant committee. Very few applicants can present their consistency efforts without displaying their wants. Side note: Companies will be looking to grant you your compensation and benefits requirements. Please refrain from a tacky disposition by discussing this topic early on.

Before soliciting the assistance from someone else to help, be sure to have helped yourself first. Have it all mapped out so that when someone offers to help, he or she can truly believe in your abilities just as much as you do. No one is too fond of handouts, not even you. Take the time to make yourself great! Others will notice it and draw to you! Remember:  It is all up to you. 100%.
