1. Make it Known
often times, we think someone is going to tap us on the shoulder and say, “Hey, I have this new position open, do you want the job.” Unfortunately, it doesn’t quite play out that way for the majority of people. Instead, you have to broadcast to your manager and sometimes your manager’s manager what you want! Just like you, our managers are so busy with the day to day; navigating your career isn’t their top priority. Don’t be afraid to schedule a 1 on 1 to discuss career goals and possibly create a career plan that will help prepare you to make that next move.
2. Be clear about what you want
it’s okay to be direct as you express your career goals. Leadership wants to know what your plans are and where you see yourself in the next 5 years. Find a way to easily lay out what interests you, what traits
you bring to the table and how you think you can add value by embarking on this new role. Be confident and bold in your delivery.
3. Network
maybe the role you are seeking isn’t on your current team. Not to worry! Take a step out of your comfort zone and schedule a lunch with the hiring manager or perhaps someone with whom you might be working closely with.
These lunches will give you an opportunity to showcase your interpersonal skills and enthusiasm behind the role.
4. Showcase your Talents
sometimes you have to show that you have what it takes to do the job before the job is given to you. Volunteer to work on a special project as it relates to the new role for a few hours during the week. Not only does
this show your passion, but it also shows your ability to handle multiple jobs at once; just be sure your current job doesn’t fall to the waste side.
All of these tips are low hanging fruit that can be achieved. At the end of the day, you control your career path, no one else!
