“Growth and comfort do not coexist” assures Ginni Rometty ─ the first chairwoman CEO of the international corporation IBM.

There is little or no joy in becoming an adult. As most of us know, it entails the process of making mistakes, breakdowns, fears, insecurities, and many more uncomfortable emotions.

As humans, we spend our lives transitioning through different phases of development growth.

According to the first Human Development Report (1990), the human development approach for advancing human well-being is bearing a new course. For all of us to experience full well-being, we need more than basic financial freedom. It requires us to expand our aspirations.

I believe that human growth, self-awareness and development are necessary if we, as individuals, are looking to achieve long-term sustainability in our lives.

All the mentioned highlight the importance for individuals to focus on their choices and opportunities. To stand up and choose what type of life we wish to live.

In this sense, here is my selection of 5 learning about growth and how those can support and empower our awareness approach in life:

1. YOU WILL HAVE TO LOSE YOURSELF TO FIND YOURSELF

Relearning and questioning who you are then drawing from scratch is necessary to consciously recognize your unique identity; and most importantly: to feel comfortable within your mind, the one place that follows you wherever you go in life.

2. NOT MAKING A DECISION IS ALSO A DECISION

Agile decision-making comes with practice. It is normal for humans to have doubts. However, knowing how to handle fears and constantly developing our self-confidence is essential when we seek positive changes. The universe rewards those brave enough to drive action.

3. THE WORST BETRAYAL RARELY COMES FROM OUR ENEMIES

Unfortunately, this world does not allow us to be naive. Better you accept that you may face betrayals and deceptions from the most unexpected faces. As long as your foundation remains solid and you protect your true self, everything else will be fine. Remember that forgiving and letting go is a basis for the healthy pathway.

4. REAL AND GENUINE PEOPLE ARE PRECIOUS

The more you grow, the more you realize and appreciate how precious and rare genuine individuals are. You better take care of all those who show you with actions that they value you because they will be your source of motivation to continue spreading light. A reciprocal support network makes a huge difference in our development path.

5. YOU ARE THE ONLY ONE RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR DESTINY

How many of us have spent periods in our lives in which we adopted a complaining mindset? Reversing that attitude starts with accepting our power as designers of our own destiny. Sometimes we just have to jump and believe in ourselves while admitting that “the light at the end of the tunnel” has been always within us.

By and large, growth comes from the courage to leave our comfort zone. Risks will become a great adventure if you allow yourself to let go, flow like the water, and embark on your unique path surrounded by the right people.

“I always did something I was a little not ready to do. I think that’s how you grow. When there’s that moment of ‘Wow, I’m not really sure I can do this,’ and you push through those moments, that’s when you have a breakthrough.” ― Marissa Maye, Former CEO, Yahoo
